Reviews Of Our Best TaylorMade Irons 2025 & Best TaylorMade Irons for Mid Handicap

1. TaylorMade 2024 P770 Iron : Compact Distance with Forgiveness

Interestingly forgiving for its size, a regular, low-handicap iron

TaylorMade 2024 P770 Iron

Specifications

  • Configuration: 4-AW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Well-honed aesthetics
  • Fantastic feel and turf interaction
  • Must be purchased with P7CB irons in the set

Reasons to avoid

  • Can alienate mid-handicappers

In 2024, the TaylorMade P770 irons will receive a mini makeover, and we dig the new looks. The manufacturers clearly tried to shift the P770 irons a touch lower in the handicap spectrum towards the new ‘player cavity’ iron—the P7CB.

Weighting with the highlighted heel and toe tungsten promotes the internal improvement of MOI. Meanwhile, CG positions have also been refined to optimize ball flight. Levels are lower in the longer irons and higher in the shorter ones to help with launch and maximize but control spin levels.

The new sole is a massive plus point, especially for a guy like me who plays most of my golf on firm, tight, links turf. The irons also look great in the bag and a dress. We tested the P770 irons over an extended testing period, and the results were excellent; consistent performance over a lengthy testing period is a key factor in the success of this iron.

2. TaylorMade 2025 P790 Iron : The Ultimate Distance Iron

A thin-distance iron that will appeal to a wide range of abilities

TaylorMade 2025 P790 Iron

Specifications

  • Configuration: 3-AW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Massively improved feel
  • Aesthetic polish: Some nice aesthetic refinements
  • The new singular design is fantastic

Reasons to avoid

  • The smaller address profile will not be to the taste of everything.

What clever, subtle, but profound refinements TaylorMade wrought to their latest generation P790 iron after the success of its predecessor in 2023. Like its predecessor, this is a brilliant iron that will suit many players and is a candidate for one of the best golf irons in 2025.

So, I will start with the feel that this offers. We ping-ponged between this version and the 2023 P790 during testing, and the feel difference was quite significant. That sensation of blistering pace and power is still very much present, but TaylorMade has somehow managed to take some of the punch out of the feel without sacrificing any ball speed. This means these irons stand alongside the best compact mid-handicap irons for a feel.

The CG has been lowered in the long irons for increased launch and playability but moved higher up in the short irons for better control and spin in the scoring clubs. But this is still a super-forgiving club—we saw no drop in ball speed on strikes off of centre, while the lovely feel was still in evidence even across miss-hits, which isn’t always the case with competing models such as Callaway Elyte iron or Cobra DS-ADAPT iron.

As for people here in the highly handicapped part of the world, I think maybe not so much. The slightly thinned-out topline and cleaner, neater look shifts this iron visually closer to the ‘better player’ camp and might scare a few looking for forgiveness. This one is sitting on the fence visually between the best irons, low handicappers, and best distance irons regarding size. Still, we’re pleased to say there has been zero drop-off in forgiveness, so if you’re a bit uneasy, try to embrace the pretty, skinnier look!

3. TaylorMade Qi Iron : The Most Forgiving Iron Ever?

Your most forgiving and robust iron

TaylorMade Qi Iron

Specifications

  • Configuration: 4-LW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Exceptional distance
  • Very forgiving
  • With a good launch due to lifted lofts

Reasons to avoid

  • Visually, it is not a significant departure from the Stealth iron
  • Quite a firm feel of impact

Revisiting the aesthetic, TaylorMade was pleased with what they created with the Stealth as very few changes are visible in this latest model. With the slight exception of a more prominent badge on the back and a touch more chrome, that is all detectable by the naked eye.

There have been quite a few tweaks in the performance department as TaylorMade offers up ‘straight distance’ – a proprietary face tech engineered to suit each head and face throughout the set to control the flex and cut spin that blights the game of most punters in the mid-tools of the handicap range.

Specifically, CG location has also been optimized for each iron, lower in the long irons to help elevate easier launches and higher in the short irons to enable more flight control.

With the Qi irons, speed is the name of the game—the ball flew off the face at a head-turning rate, which really helps carry those distance gains. This meant spin wasn’t exceptionally high with these irons, as we observed during testing.

4. TaylorMade Stealth Iron : A Perfect Blend of Power & Control

A beautiful game-improvement iron that provides incredibly tight dispersion

TaylorMade Stealth Iron

Specifications

  • Configuration: 4-LW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Incredibly accurate
  • Significantly longer than outgoing SIM2 Max
  • Tonal but not annoying sound and feel

Reasons to avoid

  • Low spin limits significant stopping power

When the Stealth irons were released in 2020, they became one of if not the best game-improvement iron. That trend continues to 2023 with the new Stealth HD iron, but not before being compact, longer and less draw-biased.

The level of forgiveness on offer here is off the scales, whilst TaylorMade treat us to another cracking-looking set of irons. If you get a custom fitting, spin is low on the Stealths but can be fixed. During testing, we were impressed with how far and straight this club hit, the former more than most of the competitors, and will help mid to high handicappers hit more greens in regulation – and therefore reduce scores. 5. TaylorMade Stealth HD Irons : High Launch & Maximum Forgiveness

TaylorMade’s  extreme method for producing a high-launching, draw-biased iron set

TaylorMade Stealth HD Irons

Specifications

  • Config: 5-SW
  • Hand: RH / LH

Reasons to buy

  • High launch
  • Plenty of draw bias
  • Forgiving on an angle and through the grass

Reasons to avoid

  • Unconventional appearance could turn some off

The Stealth HD model is built for the higher handicap player or, the more senior player whose swing speed may fall into the middle of the pack. Taylormade has done everything possible to promote a high, draw-biased ball flight with hybrids like head shape, shallow face height, and wide sole.

We think the Stealth HDs deserve a spot in the conversation for the best golf irons for beginners, especially when quickly getting the ball in the air with these clubs in the bag. Not everyone may fall in love with the new model’s looks, but in terms of performance, the iron is all action for those in the right mess or slice bubble. The sole of the iron has a step-down design, meaning it plays a lot narrower than it looks but, at the same time, gives forgiveness through the turf.

6. TaylorMade P7MB 2023 Irons : Tour-Level Performance

A muscle back designed for elite golfers and tour professionals

TaylorMade P7MB 2023 Irons

Specifications

  • Configuration: 3-PW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Updated sole grind excels through grass
  • Clean looks give a premium feel

Reasons to avoid

  • They are not exactly forgiving, given that they’re blades, but…

TaylorMade has opted for a cleaner aesthetic with a broader and more symmetrical muscle look down the back of the head compared to previous bladed models. We find these on the larger size side for bladed irons at the address.

These are not surprisingly worth mentioning in the conversation about the best golf blade irons, as the top line offers consistency and a tinge (just enough) of forgiveness right up to the longer units.

Blade purists will also approve of the P7MB because it’s one of the best-forged blade irons on the market. It uses 1025 carbon as a raw material to give a super-soft feel and has been forged five times with a 2000-ton press.

They feel like the proper forged bladed irons and will offer performance improvements against older models, thanks in no small part to the reworked sole grind. If you’re ready to level up to some blades, they’re well worth consideration.

7. TaylorMade P7CB Iron : A Perfect Players’ Cavity Back

A touch more forgiving than a blade but still directed at responsible ball strikers

TaylorMade P7CB Iron

Specifications

  • Configuration: 4-PW
  • Hand: RH/LH

Reasons to buy

  • Beautiful looks
  • We would welcome the addition of a set ‘gap’ wedge
  • Lovely turf interaction

Reasons to avoid

  • Minimalist look not everyone’s cup of tea

New Player Cavity Irons: P7CB TaylorMade – On the heals of countless other highly popular irons aimed at low handicap golfers, TaylorMade released their latest player cavity irons in the form of the P7CB, and they hope to sit right there in amongst the already dense marketplace of great irons for better players on the course. We’ve spotted the P7CBs in the bags of tour pros for several weeks now, and we figured out why after testing them.

There is nothing revolutionary about the technology in these irons, but one thing has been added to aid both forgiveness and feeling. For a better feel and more consistent forging, the bulk of the head has been forged at nearly double the pressure compared to what’s deemed ‘industry standard’ before being milled out through the sole to form two pockets.

Space within those pockets is given over to two kinds of material: tungsten and a new metal matrix composite material. This allows weight to be freed up and positioned around the clubhead where the manufacturer thinks best.

There’s plenty of scope to match these with new P770 irons if you need even more help with the longer irons of the set, but we recommend getting a custom fit if you’re throwing down on irons like this that maximise your chance of success.

How do we test golf irons?

The process we follow when testing and rating golf irons combines an in-depth process and the experience and knowledge of the Golf Irons Review test team. With iron testing, we usually try to test the irons first in a controlled environment, typically with an indoor simulator, launch monitor and premium golf balls. We do both outdoor testing and to get a read on the performance of the irons in different conditions.

Our commitment and experience are what we are most proud of in our testing! We have tested many thousands of golf clubs, bags, and accessories over the years, so we have certainly seen it all and then some, the good and the bad. Luckily, because of the quality of golf equipment today, the overwhelming majority is good.

Just as important, however, is our reviews are golfers, for golfers. There’s no such thing as a manufacturer ‘buying’ a good review – if a product is good, we tell you. If it’s terrible, we will show you how it came. Due to our experience, we know what to test and what to look for when we are given a new product to review.

The best irons: how to choose the right one for you

The marketplace for irons is crowded and confusing, so choosing the right irons to fit your recreation can be a daunting and sometimes overwhelming activity. We’ve included some tips below to help you get started and narrow down your search for a set of irons you can fall in love with:

Your Handicap And Ability

If you are a 25 handicap, there is little point in buying blades. Likewise, if you are a scratch handicap, buying a best game improvement irons set would seem a touch repetitive.

Irons are crafted with specific skill levels and styles in mind. Most higher handicappers will be using cavity back irons, which will provide as much forgiveness as possible in a large iron head; us mid-low handicappers will veer towards the more bladed irons, which will be forged, give you a better feel and control but less forgiveness.

To learn more, check out our excellent guides to the most forgiving irons (high handicappers) and best golf irons for mid-handicappers.

Price

If you play a round of golf once or twice a month, investing over $1000 in a shiny new set of irons probably isn’t a rational financial decision. However, for a total golf nut, that investment, with a custom fitting, might well be worthwhile. Assuming the mid-to-high-end range, for a set of cavity-back TaylorMade irons that offer the most distance and forgiveness, you will likely be looking at around $800-$900 for a set.

Add in some heavy-hitting forge and blade, and you’re looking at $1000 to $1500 or more, but this is kind of its wheelhouse, and you might end up with a very high-quality, premium product.

Look at our guide on the best budget irons for a less expensive option.

Custom Fit

As stated, custom fitting has exploded in the last few years, and it’s obvious why. This means you’ll leave the best-suited golf clubs out on the course, ensuring you have the right flex and length of the shaft, right lie angle, and correct iron head, which happens courtesy of a custom fitting session.

FAQs

What are TaylorMade irons recommended?

All TaylorMade irons will do OK and in a manner that will cater to what the player is listening to. Some seek distance and forgiveness, such as the Stealth or P790, while others, like the P7MC and P7MB, feel orientated and aimed at the low handicapper. We reckon that the best TaylorMade iron out there at the moment is the Stealth for its superb distance and accuracy, with the P790 taking a close second with its strong all-round package. The P770 was a great option for the low handicapper who wanted more traditional lofts but still the forgiveness.

Is TaylorMade suitable for beginners?

Especially the TaylorMade Stealth iron, which is one of the most forgiving irons on the market. The Stealth HD iron is also a game changer for golfers who are new to the game, as it offers even more playability. The P790 will still unquestioningly shine in the hands of novices who prefer to be looking down at something flute-ish rather than tank-like.
