Reviews Of Our Best Callaway Irons 2025

1. Callaway Elyte Irons: Best game improvement Irons

Callaway Elyte Irons

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 4-SW
  • 7-iron loft: 29°

Reasons to buy

  • Exceptional aesthetics
  • Very powerful
  • Great turf interaction

Reasons to avoid

  • A bit too firm for some of the readers

Before taking these irons out of the box, we were buzzed to try Callaway’s latest offering. After tasting them, we were even more eager to try them. They’re beautiful. Typically, the best-looking irons in golf are reserved for the game’s elite, who take the field using blades and other less user-friendly sets.

When we have the Elyte irons in our hands, they feel super powerful, and feedback from the strike is excellent, thanks in no small part to Callaway’s ‘Speed Frame’ construction’ – essentially allowing for more of the urethane microspheres that do wonders for feel and acoustics.

That’s not the only impressive-sounding tech; however, Callaway has used the power of AI to take its development to the next level with the Ai10x face, promising 10 times the number of ‘control points’ seen in previous versions. It’s also been fitted with a fresh sole design that’s supposed to improve turf interaction.

Performance on the launch monitor wasn’t excessively different from what we saw from the 2024 irons, but turf interaction and workability showed significant improvement. That’s a shoo-in for the best game improvement iron of 2025.

2. Callaway Elyte X Irons: Most user-friendly

Callaway Elyte X Irons

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 4-SW
  • 7-iron loft: 28°

Reasons to buy

  • Exceptional shelf appeal
  • Extremely powerful
  • Great turf interaction

Reasons to avoid

  • A little more feel than some competitors

Overall, these Elyte X irons continue the trend of everything good about the standard Elyte irons. In terms of looks, these are highly pleasing to the eye , especially for game improvement irons. It is gratifying to find that the looks live up to the performance.

If the regular Elyte irons are the ‘game improvement’ irons, then think of the Elyte X irons as ‘super related improvement irons,’ with more offset, increased head size, and broader soles to dish out as much forgiveness as possible. They also have power through the strike, the delightful turf interaction, and the feedback on the hit and the ball’s flight.

The results show some minor numerical differences compared to the standard model, but nothing drastic. The most obvious is the extra couple of yards you get during testing—but that’s probably not just down to the PXG Elyte X having slightly stronger lofts (the Elyte X has a 28° 7-iron; the standard Elyte is 29°).

The main difference is the psychological factor of the more oversized, chunkier clubhead, which should appeal to players who need help with their iron play. Higher handicappers will want to see as much as they can in the clubhead, as much offset as possible, and a healthy, thick top line to give them tour reassurance; each box is pretty well ticked here. The aim here is to make the game feel a little bit more accessible, and that’s exactly what Callaway has done with its latest irons.

3. Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Iron: Most forgiving

Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Iron

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 4-SW
  • 7-iron loft: 28°

Reasons to buy

  • Very competitive on distance
  • Very stylish and sophisticated-looking
  • Impressively forgiving

Reasons to avoid

  • Low spin might hurt stopping power

Joining Callaway’s 2024 lineup are the Paradym Ai Smoke irons, which are designed to split the difference between distance irons and the most forgiving irons. The leading tech to speak of is the all-new Ai Smart Face, which refines iron performance using swing data from thousands of real-life golfers. The result is a face built around maximizing distance with a tight dispersion into the green.

But how did it test? We considered sound and feel advanced for irons in this category, which was, of course, a plus. Distance was impressive on strikes all over the face, and it totally took us by surprise. Clearly, the fastest speeds were seen in the middle of the face, but dropoffs were so small that forgiveness ended up being excellent.

Overall, the Ai Smoke rises to the top of numerous categories, including feel and sophistication of looks, of all the distance irons I have hit this season. If you want some distance-enhancing irons that will look like part of your golf bag and feel softer than most game improvement irons, this might be the set for you.

4. Callaway Apex CB Iron: Best for feel

Callaway Apex CB Iron

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 3-AW
  • 7-iron loft: 34°

Reasons to buy

  • Stunning visually
  • Lively yet soft impact feel
  • Stable flight

Reasons to avoid

  • Non-workability as compared to Apex MB

Callaway says its new Apex CB irons are for “the most discerning Tour pros and elite ball-strikers” and feature a new forged construction for pure feel, precise shot-making, and workability. They were not a letdown on the road, with a bevy of new tech delivering performance.

Aesthetically, we liked the irons — a sleek and stylish design that hit the right note between a classic look and left little hints and nods of modern innovation. They differ slightly from their predecessor, with the softer, more curved toe and smoother transition from hosel to topline playing to our eye.

In terms of performance, they were also hard to fault. The Apex CB was aimed at golfers who wanted a more forgiving iron than a pure-bred blade but with plenty of control and workability as well. Our testing shows huge amounts of forgiveness on offer, especially from a distance and ball-flight perspective.

5. Callaway 2024 Apex Pro Iron: Best looking

Callaway 2024 Apex Pro Iron

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 3-AW
  • 7-iron loft: 33°

Reasons to buy

  • Outstanding forgiveness
  • Packed with technology
  • Great shelf appeal

Reasons to avoid

  • The Profil (height) of short irons may not be for everyone

For the first time in an Apex iron, we find a hollow body design with a forged face and a 1025 carbon steel body for a softer feel than previous versions.

Visually, the 2024 Apex Pro iron is a progressive face shape that creates higher ball speed in the extended and more precision in the short irons. In testing, it was subtle but also evident between the bag’s more extended and shorter sections.

In addition to the differences, we found that, with these irons, the misses were to the left, which we attributed to the extra offset. This is designed for those who slice the ball, with the strike feeling hugely satisfying overall but slightly firmer than that of the other models in the range. But overall , it is by no means unlikable.

6. Callaway 2024 Apex MB Iron: Best blade

Callaway 2024 Apex MB Iron

Specifications

  • Set configuration: 3-AW
  • 7-iron loft: 34°

Reasons to buy

  • Recent sole upgrades also made for better footing
  • More techy than other irons in this bracket
  • Good strikers will welcome the workability

Reasons to avoid

  • Purists will find the aesthetic off-putting

Apex MB irons provide a bold combination of classic beauty and modern technology. First up, the Apex MB 2024 iron is heavy on pure precision and awesome workability, covering many bases for precise ball strikers on the hunt for a fresh set of the best golf blade irons.

While it is a blade design, the profile at the address is somewhat different than what you find in the current market. How, you may ask? This is not the case for the Apex MB, which has a long topline that flows directly from the hosel, while others have a softer, more arched transition from the hosel to the topline. These images are necessarily subjective, but to us, the MB was a feast for the eye.

When it came to the performance, we could not be more impressed. Callaway has listened to their Tour staff and resurfaced a “dual chamfer” on the sole. A leading-edge softening up split accelerating through the turf, allowing us to cut shot a nuance with impressive shot control that left even the tightest dispersement.

How do we test irons?

Testing golf irons is a combination of our testing process and the knowledge and experience of the Golf Monthly test team. As to the specific procedure, before any testing, the team will typically attend product launches and consult with R&D experts at the manufacturer to learn as much about the new technology as possible.

For testing, we tend to first go indoors to hit the irons in a controlled setting. This typically occurs on an indoor simulator at Foresight Sports with premium balls and the GCQuad launch monitor. The outside testing is generally done at West Hill Golf Club, which has some of the best practice facilities in the British Isles.

We believe in doing both and keeping the irons tested to ensure they are thoroughly tested in different conditions. With that said, manufacturers cannot buy a glowing review , and we base our findings on test lab results and our own experiences. That is because we aim to provide the best quality strata coverage so you have a better sense of the irons.

How to choose irons

As you might have noticed, the golf iron market can be crowded and confusing, and knowing you have the right iron for your game can be a minefield. We hope this article has provided some guidance on the best options available, but here is some extra advice to help you search for the best golf iron for your (and your game’s) needs in this packed and crowded marketplace.

Your Handicap And Ability

This is arguably the most critical step No. 1: Figuring out what kind of iron best fits your game. This is not gospel, but higher handicappers tend to play cavity back irons for maximum forgiveness in a larger iron head. In contrast, the mid-low handicappers tend to play more forged bladed irons, providing more incredible feel and control but less forgiveness.

You’ll know how good, or maybe not so good, your ball striking is likely to be, so make sure you’re putting a set of irons into your bag that reflects where your game is now, not where you’d like it to be. We have many excellent guides that go into depth on this, so look at our guide on the best forgiving irons if you are a high handicapper or our guide on the best irons for a mid-handicapper.

Price

These are the all-important considerations for any golfer to focus on when choosing irons. As you will have noticed in this list, the price can differ massively between irons. Generally, for a set of cavity back irons—the kind to deliver the most distance and forgiveness—you are looking between $600-$800 for a set of seven irons.

This can obviously vary between brands, so we are going through and pulling the ones we think give you the best bang for your buck in this category on this list. The price is a fair bit higher for the forged and bladed versions—upwards of $1000—but this is par for the course, and you’ll receive a premium, high-quality product in return.

Custom Fit

Whether you are chasing the latest irons or disabled, this is an essential step of the iron buying process as can get. A custom fit session will ensure you have the correct flex and length of the shaft, the correct lie angle, and the right iron head for your game, meaning you will end up with the best golf clubs that are as ideally suited for you as possible out on the course.

Most golfers will, at some point, try to play at least one round in the same size clothes that fit at a local golf retailer after a custom fit. While it can be intimidating if you’re a total novice and/or have reservations about smacking golf shots in front of witnesses, fittings are critical to that club purchase. Try to list three or four iron heads that you like the look of before you head into a custom fit, and only then narrow them down in a fit to the best for your game. Some golf retailers or club professionals at your local golf club offer custom fitting.
